Shotcrete has often been described not as a material but as a process. This process produces a structure that exhibits superior hardened qualities such as high strength, low permeability and high durability compared to high quality conventional form and pour methods.

With its history deeply connected with civil engineering, shotcrete has been incorporated into the construction of water retaining structures since the 1920’s. Since its inception shotcrete has had major development and improvement of its key technologies. Some of the primary developments include. Wet-mix shotcrete, fibre reinforcement, silica fume and waterproofing admixtures.

Although the hardened properties of shotcrete are similar to conventional cast in place concrete, the nature of the shotcrete placement process provides additional benefits, such as excellent bond with most substrates and instant or rapid capabilities in shaping, particularly on complex forms or shapes.

With most shotcrete swimming pool projects, the concrete placement is achieved in one continuous pour. This can see labour and machinery costs reduced by 30-50% in most cases over the conventional double form and pour method.

The conventional form and pour method dictates that each section of the structure has to be formed, poured and cured before the preceding section can be started.

With the uni-lateral placement process of shotcrete, projects can also see formwork and jointing costs greatly reduced or in some instances eliminated altogether.

Shotcrete constructions will see large reductions in labour and materials when compared to form and pour.

The net result can see project delivery speeds increased significantly and is why after 100 years shotcrete continues to be a key component in industries such as mining, tunnelling civil construction, bridge construction, drainage and dam building.

Not having to be designed for internal wet-mix pour and vibration pressures means shotcrete can be utilised for constructions.

Being a manual placement process, the shotcrete nozzleman can maintain precise control over placement of concrete in a wide range of different shooting conditions (for example, vertical, overhead, downward, open shooting, or shooting congested reinforcing steel and embedment’s) at a rate of productivity of about four times what was possible with poured concrete.

Many underground construction systems which are utilised in tunnelling and underground mining would not be possible with shotcrete.

Manual placement and shaping of shotcrete means that substrates can be left in a variety of manners ready for finished to be applied. The surface can either be trowelled smooth or burnished, scrabbled, or broomed depending on requirements.
Depending on the project requirements shotcrete can be waterproofed, rendered, tiled, painted, lined or left raw if aesthetics are not to be considered.

The MPA of Shotcrete can be engineered to take all loads in a similar fashion as conventional concrete and is also accepting of liquid and solid admixtures to suit project requirements.

For each project we undertake a comprehensive health, safety and environmental risk assessment specific to that project’s requirements.

We ensure all staff involved with the project comply with the controls identified in the assessment. We have developed our own comprehensive SWMS for all shotcrete projects undertaken and promote a ‘think twice, act once’ mentality in our workplace.
